FATW6 – Adventures in Mosaic Crochet – Ocean Theme – The Goldfish 1

Strip Number 6 is a bubbly fish with an optional narrow border. This Goldfish pattern is designed by Svetlana Rogatykh, our designer friend from Moscow, Russia. With this pattern, the narrow border can be placed any way you want, below the fish, above the fish, or perhaps in another of her designs. When Svetlana Rogatykh answered the call to design a pattern for our CAL, she was extremely generous and gave us what could be used as a small blanket on its own. Each part though, works beautifully with the rest of the designer patterns and we have separated it a bit to work with the flow of our blanket. As this is your adventure, if you do not want to make a full blanket with all 13 patterns, you can choose which ones to use, and if you want to do one with these particular patterns, once we have released all patterns from her group, a separate file will be released with all of hers together. In the meantime, you will get access to them one at a time, in the order of our CAL blanket.

As with all of the patterns, you will use the same yarn type and hook size throughout, unless you are switching from overlay to inset. Inset does require a smaller hook, but in Ocean theme, it is all overlay, therefore no need to worry about that now.

While the goldfish is actually a freshwater fish in the family Cyprinidae, you can also find it in brackish water. It is a common household pet, and is also popular in indoor aquariums. Goldfish breeds vary in size, body, shape, fin configuration and coloration. So, go ahead, make yours as colorful as you like. Also, for the sake of this CAL, we are putting goldfish in the Ocean to make new friends. They have strong social learning skills, constant visual contact with humans and can distinguish between individual humans. You really can bond with them.

Our featured designer today is from Moscow, Russia. Svetlana Rogatykh is a fascinating and extremely creative person. Here she tells a little about herself.

“I was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. I was taught to crochet by my great-grandmother, she also gave me my first crochet hook. I was probably 8-10 years old then. I remember very well how my great-grandmother taught me to crochet lace and showed me old patterns. Since then, I really love fine needlework. I learned to knit from the book when I was a little older. Since then, I have knitted and crocheted different clothes for myself and my loved ones. I have never knitted or crocheted according to ready-made descriptions, but always came up with something new. I graduated from Moscow State University with a degree in mathematics. But I never stopped sewing, knitting, painting and photographing. Knitting and crocheting and writing tutorials for my fantasies are my hobbies, which have now become my main job. I have a husband and a grown-up daughter and son. Sometimes I knit the clothes they want to wear. I love traveling with my husband by car, I love visiting new places, reading about history and architecture. I love to play the guitar and sing, although I started to learn this not so long ago. It is very sad that there is not enough time to do all this at the same time, it can be difficult for me to choose some of my hobbies. I love my friends and every meeting with them is a holiday for me. I like intricate ornaments and it gives me great pleasure to draw and knit or crochet them. I love learning and am very interested in making tutorials on various crochet techniques. I love handmade accessories very much and I use them myself with pleasure. I try to develop tutorials that are not boring to work with, but, as a rule, they require an advanced level and experience to perform. I hope you enjoy my work too!”

Back to Goldfish, here are the versions from our makers, some with the one repeat as individual strips, and then as the 6th strip in blankets, with more than one repeat. Notice the placement of the narrow waves, and figure where you would like to place yours. When you look through the pattern you will get a better understanding of the overall look.

The above blanket was worked in three repeats and will fit a twin sized bed using worsted weight yarn and H/5.0mm hook.
