Adventures in Mosaic Crochet – FATW6 Ocean Theme – Mosaic Crab

We are certainly enjoying seeing all of the enthusiasm regarding this CAL. Just to go over some details, each strip pattern consists of ONE repeat. Therefore, if you want a wider blanket, you need to work more than one repeat. As you complete each strip, you may add additional rows of just the back loop single crochet, or just jump into the next pattern that comes out and continue from there. You may do every single one (13 for this theme), or you can skip some depending on how big you want your blanket to be.

ALSO: Patterns are released twice a week. Monday mornings, and Thursday mornings. Today is the third strip of our Ocean themed mosaic blanket. It is the sweet, non-crabby Mosaic Crab by Suzanne Lively Boren. Crabs live in all the worlds oceans, in fresh water and on land. They are decapod crustaceans of the infraorder Brachyura. They are covered with a thick exoskeleton and go through a molting process. They typically walk sideways because of the articulation of their legs. They communicate by drumming or waving their pincers. Lots of people find them pretty tasty too!

Suzanne Lively Boren, from Not So Boren Crochet has created these cuties for our CAL. We first met Suzanne as a Maker in our group. She has tirelessly worked every single strip we have and then along the way came up with her own, which are a great addition to the blankets. You will be seeing more of her work. Here is more about Suzanne, in her words.

“Hello there! I am Suzanne Boren! I am a stay at home mom who loves to crochet in my spare time. I have been married to a wonderful man for almost 20 years, and we have 4 children and a dog. We are a retired military family, and recently settled down after moving around the country. When I was 8 years old, my mother taught me to crochet, and most of what I made was blankets. After setting crochet aside for close to 10-11 years, I picked the craft back up in 1997 when I found out I was expecting my first child. I hooked for a few months, but put it aside until I was expecting again (my first pattern, I suppose!) I have since made each of my children a blanket or a stuffed animal, and my passion for crocheting has increased exponentially! In 2014 when I had my last child, I decided to start making items for her to wear, and was given an opportunity to test a pattern for the first time. That experience inspired me to offer my skills to test patterns for other designers as well. I liked that I was able to assist a designer with finding any potential errors or complications as I strived to recreate their vision of the finished project. I have designed a few patterns myself through the years since (mainly filet designs), but mostly graphgans for friends and family, and even created my own business, “Not So Boren Crochet”! However, I never released my patterns for others to make. I was recently introduced to the Mosaic crochet technique, and while testing these designs, enjoyed it to the point that I decided to take a shot at creating one myself. I attempted to make small design, and when I shared the picture with one of the other designers, she asked if I would attempt a specific design. I said, “sure I’ll give it a go.” As it would happen, while creating this design I found I loved doing them and created several others. This crab design is one of these others! The Mosaic Crab Strip. As I was working on the other strips for this CAL, I started thinking of other items/creatures that would fit the category and just started graphing them out. I even asked my family members what came to mind when thinking of beaches and oceans. They gave me a lot of wonderful ideas, some however aren’t easily translated into the 48 stitch repeats, others were already in the works by other designers and some just didn’t come out as I envisioned them. The crab strip is one I feel came out great! We just moved to a suburb south of McConnell Air Force Base — Derby, Kansas USA. We are new to the town but not to the area. Derby is home to the 3-time defending 6A state champion football team, and boasts the largest dinosaur park in the United States! It’s the perfect mix of small town vibe with big city amenities.”
