Adventures in Mosaic Crochet – Ocean Theme – Starfish Sally

Upon our ocean adventure and exploration, we come across some adorable starfish! This endearing starfish pattern is brought to you by Lynette Kosar of Lavender Cup Cottage.

Starfish belong to the phylum Echinodermata. They are known as sea stars and are not classified as fish. What we mostly see are the dried out ones that end up in the sand by the ocean, but alive and under the sea they are fascinating creatures with lots of features. Did you know that starfish have eyes at the end of each arm and they move by using hundreds of tubular feet? The most common starfish have only 5 arms while some can have up to 40. They are even able to regenerate lost limbs.

The second strip of our Adventures in Mosaic Crochet – Ocean Theme is Starfish Sally and as mentioned above, it was designed by Lynette of Lavender Cup Cottage. This is some interesting information regarding this designer.

Lynette is the owner/designer of Lavender Cup Cottage and says, “I live in Conneaut Lake, PA, USA with my dog, Lucy. I have been crocheting for 40+ years and learned from my great grandmother as a child. She lived in a mobile home and when I first started crocheting, my goal was to make a chain the length of her house. At 12 years old I made my very first project on my own without a pattern. It was my version of a stuffed teddy bear that I gave to my best friend. It was not perfect at all, but I was so proud of myself. I love making things, whether it’s crocheting, sewing, or quilting. I used to cross stitch but haven’t done it in years. There just aren’t enough hours in the day for all the things I want to make.

I am just getting started as a designer and recently opened Lavender Cup Cottage with the help of my cousin, Kim of The Crochet Couch. While visiting her she showed me how she creates C2C patterns and graphs. I loved learning and helping her, and she encouraged and mentored me in starting my own business. Currently all my patterns are in overlay mosaic crochet, but in time I will expand to inset mosaic and filet. The Overlay Mosaic strips that I created for FATW6 CAL are perfect for a confident beginner. The stitches used in US terms are chain, single crochet, back loop single crochet and front loop double crochet.

Starfish Sally
51 stitches wide x 21 rows (3” tails)
Color A: 40 yards
Color B: 48 yards
Additional 5 yards of each color needed if leaving 8” tails to make twisted fringe.

Where do I come from? I grew up on a farm in Crawford County, Pennsylvania near Townville. I currently live about 25 miles away from our old homestead in a small town called Conneaut Lake, PA which is known as the largest natural lake in the state of Pennsylvania and has a surface area of approximately 925 acres! Our population is about 720. We probably have more fish in the lake than people living in our town!”

Please be sure to explore her other patterns. If you read through this, you may have picked up that Lynette mentions “strips.” Well, you will be seeing more of her patterns. I assure you, all are great. It has been a pleasure getting to know Lynette, and we will all have another new friend from around the world!

To get started on Strip 2, you will continue to work over your first strip. You can continue Strip 1 with one more row of blsc with the two end sc stitches, and then start with row 1 of pattern 2, or you can just jump into pattern 2. In mine, I went with the extra row and you can see how that works out. Either way is fine. As you work your blanket, and do want to separate each pattern, you can certainly add extra rows in between.

This is from Silke. Her yarn is Grundl Lisa Premium, a light worsted yarn and hook size 5.0mm. You can see how beautifully the blanket is working up.

This one is mine (Silvana) and I am having lots of fun with it. My colors are from other projects but somehow they all work well together. All of the yarn is Herrschnerrs’ Worsted 8 yarn. So far, to the end of the second strip, my measurements are 40″ in width and 12 3/4″ in height.

Tawnya’s is working out beautifully and you can see her yarn and colors.
